Turn the distributor in a counterclockwise direction to advance the ignition timing. Do not over-adjust the distributor, as even a slight movement will yield a significant change in the ignition timing.
Can you time an engine without starting it?
Yes, engines do not always have to be at either mechanical or ignition TDC to start. Most cars are computer controlled and spark timing is not adjustable unless there is a adjustable distributor. The mechanical timing is not the same as the spark timing controlled by the distributor.

2. Setting base ignition timing is done by twisting the distributor; it's held down by a ½-inch bolt and clamp. You can use a swivel socket or a distributor wrench (shown) to loosen the bolt enough so you can turn the distributor. Spinning it clockwise advances timing, counterclockwise retards the timing.
What's the firing order on a 302 Ford?
The 302 firing order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 and the 351 order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Both will have counter-clockwise distributor rotation. All of the motors except 351 and the 302 H.O. will have the first firing order, the 302 H.O. and the 351 will have the other.
